Edinburgh Young Carers is a voluntary organisation that provides respite and support to young people aged 5 to 25 who care for someone at home, across North and South-East Edinburgh. The organisation focuses on improving the lives and wellbeing of young carers by raising awareness and advocating for their needs and circumstances. It offers emotional and practical support, alongside opportunities for young carers to take a break from their responsibilities. Through group activities and a friendly, supportive environment, young carers can relax, have fun, and be themselves. Edinburgh Young Carers is committed to ensuring young carers feel recognised, included, heard and supported within their communities and beyond.

Role Description

The Board Member role is a voluntary position. Board meetings are held six times a year, alternately online and face to face. Board Members contribute to the strategic direction of Edinburgh Young Carers, ensuring the organisation’s mission, values, and objectives are clearly defined and effectively implemented. Responsibilities include attending board and committee meetings, monitoring performance against agreed goals, and offering guidance on governance, risk, and compliance. Board Members are expected to act as ambassadors for the organisation, build positive relationships with stakeholders, and support fundraising and advocacy activities. This role also involves providing constructive challenge and support to the senior leadership team, helping to ensure ongoing, quality support services for young carers.

Skills and Experience

We are looking for someone who can provide a commitment in supporting the delivery of a high-quality service to young carers. The principal areas of specialism we are currently seeking are those with knowledge or experience in social work, I.T., business and commerce, substance use, child protection, and those with direct experience of being a young carer or young adult carer - either presently, or in the past. We will also actively consider anyone with relevant skills in other disciplines.
