Non Executive Directors
Job Description
Job title
Non-Executive Directors – The Prevention Project CIC
Job description
About The Prevention Project
The Prevention Project CIC is a growing Plymouth-based organisation focused on preventing gambling harm through education, early intervention and community engagement.
We're building an organisation that aims to intervene earlier — helping people understand gambling and its risks before harm becomes entrenched.
We're now strengthening our Board and are looking for three Non-Executive Directors with different areas of experience, knowledge and lived experience to help shape the next stage of The Prevention Project.
We're recruiting for:
- Non-Executive Director – Gambling Harm & Recovery
- Non-Executive Director – Strategic Development
- Non-Executive Director – Community Engagement & Development
About the roles
These are opportunities to bring your experience, knowledge, networks and perspective to a growing organisation and help shape how gambling-harm prevention develops across education, sport and communities.
We're particularly interested in people who bring relevant professional experience, lived experience, or a combination of both.
Lived experience is highly desirable across all three roles. This could include personal experience of gambling harm, supporting a family member or someone close to you, or professional experience of working with people affected by gambling, addiction or related issues.
Previous Board experience is not essential. We're interested in people who can bring genuine expertise, independent judgement and a willingness to constructively challenge and support the organisation.
1. Non-Executive Director – Gambling Harm & Recovery
We're looking for someone with experience, knowledge or lived experience of gambling harm, addiction, recovery, public health or related services.
We're particularly interested in people who have worked professionally in areas such as:
- Gambling treatment and recovery
- Addiction services
- Public health
- Mental health and wellbeing
- Safeguarding
- Research and evaluation
- Treatment and referral pathways
- Commissioning
- Youth services
- Education
- Community support
Lived experience is highly desirable. Professional experience in relevant fields is equally welcome. A combination of both would be particularly valuable.
You'll provide specialist knowledge, strategic insight, constructive challenge and understanding of appropriate support and treatment pathways.
2. Non-Executive Director – Strategic Development
We're looking for someone with experience, knowledge or lived experience relevant to strategic development, organisational growth, business or related areas.
We're particularly interested in people who have worked professionally in areas such as:
- Strategic development
- Business leadership
- Organisational growth
- Corporate strategy
- Social enterprise
- Business development
- Commissioning
- Fundraising and income generation
- Sponsorship
- Stakeholder engagement
- Strategic planning
Lived experience is highly desirable. Professional experience in strategic development, business or organisational growth is equally welcome. A combination of professional expertise and lived experience would be particularly valuable.
You'll provide Board-level insight into organisational development, sustainability, growth and new opportunities.
This role is about strategic oversight and challenge rather than managing TPP's day-to-day business relationships or operational activity.
3. Non-Executive Director – Community Engagement & Development
We're looking for someone with experience, knowledge or lived experience relevant to community development, grassroots engagement and reaching communities.
We're particularly interested in people who have worked professionally in areas such as:
- Community development
- Grassroots engagement
- Youth work
- Voluntary and community organisations
- Public health
- Social care
- Education
- Local community networks
- Community events
- Reaching underserved communities
- Local partnerships
Lived experience is highly desirable. This could include personal experience of gambling harm, addiction, financial vulnerability or supporting someone affected by these issues.
We're particularly interested in people who understand how trust is built within communities and how prevention can be made accessible and relevant.
You'll help provide community insight, challenge and strategic direction around how TPP develops its reach across Plymouth and the wider South West.
What you'll bring
Across the three roles, NEDs will provide:
- Independent oversight and constructive challenge
- Specialist knowledge and insight
- Strategic thinking and perspective
- Support around organisational development and sustainability
- Challenge around opportunities, risks and long-term development
- Relevant networks and connections where appropriate
- A genuine commitment to preventing gambling harm
Our governance model
The Prevention Project is deliberately founder-led.
Our Managing Director and founder remains responsible for the organisation's day-to-day operations and delivery.
As a NED, you won't be expected to run the organisation or become involved in routine operational decisions. Your role is to provide informed governance, independent challenge, specialist expertise and strategic perspective.
The NED roles are designed to complement, rather than replace, the operational team. Day-to-day responsibilities remain with the relevant members of the TPP team.
Commitment
Approximately four Board meetings per year, with preparation beforehand and occasional input between meetings. The roles are voluntary, with reasonable pre-approved expenses reimbursed.
Who we're looking for
You don't need previous Board experience.
We're particularly interested in people who can demonstrate:
Lived experience • Professional experience • Independent judgement • A commitment to prevention • Strategic thinking • Specialist knowledge • Ability to constructively challenge
If you've personally experienced gambling harm, supported someone through it, worked in a relevant professional field, helped develop an organisation, worked with communities, or have another relevant perspective, we'd particularly like to hear from you.
